Most Western governments strongly advise against travel. Independent travel impossible — guided tour groups only, with severe restrictions on movement, photography, and contact. Detention of foreign visitors is well-documented.

COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS

  • Group tours do not provide diplomatic protection — your tour operator is not a substitute for an embassy.
  • Photographing freely outside designated tourist sites can be treated as espionage.

JURISDICTION NOTES

  • US passport holders have been formally banned from travel to DPRK since 2017 (US Treasury restriction).
  • Borders have remained largely closed since 2020 COVID restrictions; very limited group tours have resumed.
  • Detention can result in years of hard labor — Otto Warmbier (2016) is a documented case.
